12 april 2019

Spring has begun and the first rays of sunshine have reached our country! This means that we are spending more and more time outside in the garden. But before you can enjoy your beautiful green garden, some maintenance work may be required. Perhaps the winter has left its mark on the garden and it is time to freshen it up a little. In this article, we will give you some tips on how to enjoy your green garden this spring and summer.

  1. FlowersThenumber of bees and butterflies has been declining significantly in recent years, which is worrying. You can give these little creatures a helping hand by planting flowers in your garden. For example, plants such as lavender, which smell delicious and are great for local biodiversity. It is also extremely important that you do not use toxic pesticides in your garden.
  2. Vegetable garden Besidessitting in the sun, you can also use your garden to grow vegetables! Prepare the soil well with a little fertiliser and then you can get to work. Some of the things that are easy to grow in your own garden are herbs such as basil, mint and oregano. But also all kinds of lettuce, potatoes, onions and garlic.
  3. PondDoyouhavea pond? Then spring is the perfect time to give it a good clean. Of course, it is important to remove everything that has fallen into the pond over the past few months. Also check the water hardness, because excessive rainfall in autumn and winter can reduce the hardness of the pond water. Too soft water is not good for a pond, as the oxygen plants will not grow as well. Water hardness can be restored using a special agent. This is also the time to give the pump and filter of the pond a small service.
  4. LawnDuringthe winter months, moss can develop on the lawn due to a lack of sun. For a moss-free lawn, you should rake away as much of the moss as possible. Then sow a little in any bare spots on the lawn. It is also advisable to sprinkle lime. This raises the pH value of the soil, making it less acidic. Any remaining moss will disappear and be less likely to grow back in the future.
  5. BirdhouseWhat ismore fun than seeing all kinds of birds fluttering around the garden in spring? Maybe you have already taken care of the birds during the winter by hanging fat balls or other food. In spring you can help the birds by hanging a birdhouse for them to nest in. This will not only provide a new generation of birds, but also a nice spectacle!
  6. Pruning Bypruning old or dead branches, you give the plant a chance to grow further. Always check whether pruning is really necessary. It is important that you use good and sharp tools. Blunt pruning shears are bad for a plant, in the cut there is a chance on fungi and other diseases. All the wood that is left over during pruning can be burned. Apart from getting rid of the wood, you can scatter the ashes that remain after the fire over the garden in moderation, as they are fertile.
