Saving energy in your rental property

18 november 2019

Saving energy is not only good for the environment, but also for your wallet. As a tenant, you often do not have much influence on possible energy saving measures. However, there are a number of things you can do to save energy and reduce your monthly bills, even in a rented property.

1) HeatingThe

heating is a major consumer of energy. Especially in the winter months, you really need it, but try not to turn it up too high. After all, your house doesn't have to be a sauna and snuggling up on the couch with a warm blanket is also nice. By turning down the heating when you are away and at night, you save a lot of heating costs. You can simply set the thermostat to this so you don't have to think about it every day. Radiator foil can be used to reduce heat loss from the radiators. This foil is stuck behind the radiator and reflects the heat back into the room.

2) Hot waterAvoiding

hot water is better for the environment. The most effective way to use less hot water is to take fewer (long) showers. One way to also use less water in the shower is to use a water-saving shower head. You can easily replace this yourself and take it with you when you move house. You can also save energy by not running the hot water tap longer than necessary and by washing your clothes at a lower temperature.

3) Power consumptionElectrical

appliances are becoming more energy efficient, but we use so many of them nowadays that we still use a lot of electricity. When you are not using an appliance or charger, turn it off and unplug it. Replacing incandescent, energy-saving and halogen bulbs with LED lights will make your home more sustainable. LED bulbs use much less energy and have a longer life. You can also use the dishwasher, washing machine and dryer more sustainably. Perhaps you can make some small changes to save energy with these tips. Do you not yet have a rental home or will you be moving to a new one soon? Check the energy label in advance. Then you will know how energy efficient your future home is. Compared to energy label G, with energy label A you save a few hundred euros per year.
