The National Burglary Prevention Weeks have started again

During the National Burglary Prevention Weeks, the National Burglary Prevention Foundation makes the Netherlands aware of the risks of, and the aftermath of, home burglary. The Burglary Prevention Weeks will run from 1 May to 30 June. During this period, the National Burglary Prevention Foundation challenges you to take at least one step towards burglary prevention.

Prevent a break-in

A burglar can enter a home within minutes and 80% of burglaries are committed on impulse. A burglary cannot be entirely prevented, but you can do a lot to reduce the chances of one. Don't leave your home obviously unoccupied. If a burglar suspects that you are at home, your home is more likely to be overlooked. Leave a light on or use a timer, close windows and lock doors when you go out. Also lock the garden gate and the shed. Do not turn your house into a shop window and put valuables out of sight. In short, do not make it too easy for burglars.

Going on holiday?

Don't think about it. When you come home from a relaxing holiday, your house has been ransacked by a burglar. To prevent a break-in during your holiday, you can ask your neighbours to keep an eye on your house and to clear away the incoming mail. Also be careful with what you post on public social media channels. Burglars are also on Facebook.
