Tips for saving energy and water

Earth Day, an annual event on 22 April, aims to make us aware of how important the earth is to us. Especially for this day, we share tips to save energy and water. Easy to apply, these tips will help you on your way to a more sustainable life. And besides doing your bit for nature, you also save money every month.

Use energy more consciously

Lamps

It's an obvious choice but one you can't miss: switch off lights when you leave a room. Don't leave outdoor lamps on unnecessarily either. Replace incandescent bulbs with LED and energy-saving bulbs, because a LED bulb is no less than 90% more efficient than a standard bulb! You can save a lot of energy by lighting efficiently.

Heating

Turn off the heating in rooms you are not in and close the doors so the heat stays in the right rooms. Install a smart thermostat so your home is not heated unnecessarily when you are not at home. Draft strips on windows and doors and radiator foil behind the heating keep the heat inside.

Appliances

Devices on standby still use energy, so switch them off. The off button is often not enough, so unplug devices you are not using.

Dryer

The dryer is a real energy guzzler. Hang the washing out to dry on a drying rack or in the garden. As well as saving energy, air-drying saves you a lot of money. According to the calculations of the Nibud, one tumble dryer costs €1.25.

Energy label

When you buy lighting and electronic appliances, check the energy label. This will give you an insight into the energy consumption so you can make a wise choice.

Litres of water are washed away...

Showers

With an average shower you easily use 70 litres of water. And that's in just 8 minutes! Try showering for a minute less or choosing a water-saving showerhead. This will save you litres of water every day. And another advantage: you also reduce your energy consumption.

Flushing the toilet

Use the water-saving flush button when flushing the toilet. This will save up to 8,000 litres of water per year.

Taps

You might not expect it, but a leaking tap wastes thousands of litres of water a year. So always turn off taps properly and repair leaks immediately.

Garden

You can also save a lot of water in the garden: water the garden in the morning or in the evening, otherwise the water will soon have evaporated again. Set up a rain barrel in the garden and use the collected water to water the garden. Water plants as close to the ground and roots as possible.

With a few small changes, you can make a big difference to the earth and your wallet. Which saving tips will you apply?
