King's Day 2020: at home and online

21 april 2020

This year, King's Day will be a little different from what we are used to. All events have been cancelled until at least 1 June due to the coronavirus. Unfortunately, this means that the king will not be visiting Maastricht and that there will be no King's Games, concerts or freemarkets. Of course we cannot let the birthday of our king pass us by and therefore there is now a way to celebrate King's Day at home. How? We have found out!

King's Day

The Royal Association of Orange Societies has presented a special programme so that we can still celebrate King's Day with the entire country on 27 April. Under the guise of social distancing it has been given the name Woningsdag. The programme starts at 09.45 in the morning when the bells will ring for 15 minutes all over the country. At 10.00 a.m., the National Aubade will sing the national anthem on television. Then, at 10.10 a.m., a programme will start on NPO 1 with a review of the highlights of previous Royal Days.At 12.00 hrs. the digital skechers market will start. The online version of the freemarket. Later in the afternoon, a collection of digital letters from children all over the country will be presented to the King. The KBOV has asked all children to send a digital letter or drawing in which they also tell what the corona crisis is doing to them. The orange associations are also calling on musicians and artists to perform for the elderly in their municipality between 15.00 and 16.00. The KBOV has also asked the children to send in a digital letter or drawing, telling them what the corona crisis is doing to them. At the end of the afternoon, the day will be concluded with a National Toast at 16.00. Everyone in the country can then simultaneously toast the King's birthday. Of course, our flag is also part of King's Day. That is why the KBOV has called on everyone in the Netherlands to fly the flag. Not only for the birthday boy or girl, but also for all the people who work in the care sector and are committed to our society.Of course, you don't have to stick to the programme of Living Day. You can also make it a cosy party at home with games and good food. How about some old Dutch games, such as 'koekhappen' (topping the table), 'blikgooien' (throwing tins), 'ganzenbord' (playing blackjack), 'spijkerpoepen' (nail-picking) and 'eierloop' (egg-running)? You can also make your own orange tompouches or muffins. Make it a fun competition with your family members or housemates for an afternoon of fun!
