The Wwft and proof of identity

15 juni 2020

Not every organisation is allowed to make a copy of your ID just like that. It is therefore important that you are careful with this. What about at estate agents? When vb&t Verhuurmakelaars receives your application for a rental property, we ask for a copy of your identity document. We do this because this is our legal obligation. How that works exactly we explain in this article.

Wwft

Estate agents must comply with the Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (Prevention) Act. This states that the broker is obliged to investigate the identity of the party to whom he/she will be providing a service. No services may be provided to anonymous parties to prevent money laundering or terrorist financing through estate agents, lawyers, notaries and accountants. The estate agent is obliged to collect the following data:
  • Sex name
  • First name
  • Address
  • Place of residence
  • Date of birth
  • Type, number, date and place of issue of the document

What does this mean for you?

At vb&t Verhuurmakelaars, we are also obliged to research our prospective tenants. By making a copy of your proof of identity, we comply with our legal obligation. The data that we collect with this must be kept for as long as you are a tenant and then for another 5 years afterwards. It is up to you to decide which form of identification you will provide us with a copy of: a valid passport or identity card. We do ask that you cross out your BSN number. In our "My Dossier" we have a handy tool for this, the button "Document Anonymisation".
